Shipping wine home is now prohibitive in cost. When I take a tour group there, we try alot of wines, note those we like, and see if a distributor at home can import them. My husband & I used to bring a case home in our carry on bags, but since the 3 oz. liquid rule.... I might check one or two very well wrapped bottles, but if the TSA opens your bag, then doesn't repack it correctly, disaster.  less

We'll be driving past two of them when we visit the area next week. Castelnaud & Beynac went back and forth between the British & French in the 100 yrs. war. Both Beynac & Hautefort were featured in the movie Ever After (Drew Barrymore , Angelica Houston). On my wine tours, we also visit Monbazillac, where a sweet white dessert wine is made, but I didn't find it's history as interesting.  less

I know what you mean about not being able to retire. My husband is with Delta, and between his dwindling "K", loss of most of his retirement in the bankruptcy, and the last few years paycuts - that dream of early retirement is out.
My onlt tips are that if you're going to France in August, book everything early. July & August are the worst times to go, as everyone in Europe takes their vacations then. I only book my tours for Spring & Fall when we can enjoy fewer crowds and better prices, but still have decent weather. My latest tour is listed under International Events on Mustlovewine.  less

If there is one thing that the region of Bordeaux is proud of, it would probably be its line of wines. For the record, Bordeaux is the largest wine-producing region in the whole world, and it would only follow that they produce the best wines available in the market today. Bordeaux is famous for its red wines, though, of course, its white varieties are doing exceptionally good as well.

Every Bordeaux wine possesses distinct quality, flavor, and taste. There are no two wines that are seemingly alike. And to come up with variations, wine makers planted and blended different vines that would collaboratively make up a unique-tasting and fine wine.

Bordeaux wines were said to have existed in the post 48 AD and were originally created for soldiers. As the years advanced, Bordeaux wines found other markets and were thereby exported, though in the earlier years wine exportation was never seen as a grand idea. Bordeaux wine industry witnessed several threats before like infestations and critical economic difficulties, but emerged from them successfully.
