Isn't this an indication of some sort of consistent trend yet?
Having won a gold on The 2005 Old Vine Zinfandel at the Harvest Fair I was also honored for growing the gold medal grapes. It's starting to sink in: It is the 4th such award I've received in this highly competitive field in 9 years -One for the Sweepstakes best Red of all Sonoma County Red Wines and 3 for Gold in the High End Zinfandel Class. The three previous awards were for the Grapes I grew that were designated in other's wines (who also collected a 90 -94 on every vintage from parker). They no longer bother to enter that wine and I didn't enter till the last 3 years so I only had a chance at a grower award about 1/2 of the last 9 years! I should get the word out- I still hear a winery with $$$ bragging 10 times a day in a paid drive-time radio commercial about the one bronze medal they have on a previous vintage on their low quality "rat-gut" wine they are trying to mass market!  less

Started learning in a circa 1906 Zinfandel Vineyard as a 10 year-old (Truly with great interest it grape farming') in 1972... Spent my adult life preserving those Zinfandel vines & the Trousseau Gris we planted in 1981 ...using Organic compost, a minimal amount of Organic Elemental Sulfur dust … and most importantly by continuing to tend each of the old Zinfandel vines with my own hands..

I love to share & discuss my experiences of growing, making, & enjoying wine. If you want my input on the grapevine in your back yard, are wondering what is happening in my area of wine country, or what ever shoot me a message. I also love to learn about other grapes & Wines from around the world! In any case I want to extend to you my friendship from this part of wine country!

    Good Zinfandel
    - sadly since it is widely planted in California (3rd after Chard & Cab) some are poor & turn people off on Zinfandel.
Pet peeve: Having toiled for the better part of 3 decades in a vineyard that was over 70 years old when I started, I get annoyed finding Johnny-come-lately (s) with
~18 year old vines labeling his zin as "Old Vine" & to be a poor wine on top of it!

  • Zinfandel Wine
    97 members
Zinfandel can be light and fruity, much like French Beaujolais, or lively, complex and age worthy, like cabernet sauvignon or claret. It can also be made into big, ripe, high alcohol style wines that almost resemble port.

Zinfandel has a very hardy nature. Adaptable to a wide range of soils and climates, its vines tend to be vigorous and productive.

Because of its vigor, generosity and resistance to vine disease, many zinfandel vineyards exist that are seventy-five to more than one hundred years old.

Zinfandel aficionados believe these "old vines" produce the best wines because the older vineyards set smaller crops and the grapes tend to ripen more evenly.

Zinfandel is one red varietal that is best enjoyed in its youth. With more bottle age the luscious fruit that distinguishes Zinfandel drops markedly and the wine can show a pronounced taste of higher alcohol levels.

When paired with grilled steaks, chops or meat that has been stewed Zinfandel becomes a prime motivation for people to become wine lovers.

  • Pinot Gris (Pinot Grigio) Wine
    37 members
The Pinot gris is a white wine that has been popular since medieval times and originated in the Burgundy region of France. Pinot gris was said to be a favorite of Emperor Charles IV. In 1711, a German merchant named Johann Ruland discovered a wild grape growing in the fields of the Palatinate. He produced a wine from these grapes that became known as the Rulander. Later on, the vine was discovered to be Pinot gris.

The characteristics and taste of Pinot gris vary greatly and are based on the region and wine production style. Some of the popular types of Pinot gris include the Alsatian, German, Oregon, and the Italian Pinot Grigio. Alsatian Pinot gris are medium to full-bodied with a rich and somewhat flowery taste. German Pinot gris are more full-bodied and has a sour and slightly sweet taste. Oregon wines are medium bodied with a fruity aroma.

  • Boutique really?
    Posted July 30, 2010
Many large wine companies have been buying up popular small and medium sized wineries. Some have continued to make the wines for these Brands in their original facilities but more and more the tasting rooms are staying open but the wine making is being moved to the more efficient large (o.k. GIANT) facilities where they make many hundreds of thousands (or millions) of Cases of many brands, sometimes even quietly upping the production but always exponentially cutting cost and at least risking quality. As a wine lover would you care if this happens to your favorite formerly "hand-crafted" Boutique wine?
