Malbec is undergoing a mini revival in Australia. Up until the 1980s it was favoured as the minor component in three way blends with Shiraz and Cabernet. Now Shiraz is made as a varietal and Cabernet is blended with Merlot, typically 80/20. Malbec seemed destined for obscurity as few old malbec vineyards were replanted with the variety.

Quite a few wineries are now making varietal malbecs, a change in consumer attitudes and a desire for winelovers to try something new has improved the prospects for marketing malbec in Australia. Production is still very low, I don’t think much, if any, Australian Malbec is exported.  less

Thank you for your friendship! You sure sounds like a very unique fellow. I'd love to help to introduce you to some very fine Israeli wines! Although I currently live in the best American wine country - the San Francisco Bay Area (Napa, Sonoma etc') I also import and distribute in the US some amazing boutique wineries form Israel! You said you like Gewurtz and Syrah? Well try to get your hand on this wines from Israel - in particular the Tulip Winery Reserve Syrah and almost any Gewurtz you can find from the Galilee or Judian mountains (Jerusalem area). I'm also a great fun of South Rhone wines - my favorites are Cote-Rotie, Hermitage and Cornas. I also like very much Chateauneuf-du-pape. Check my website at http://israelwinecompany.com  less

    Hi Harry!

Thanks for the friend request! It sounds like you know a great deal about wines! I too have enjoyed South African wines. The Shiraz from there that I've tried has been great. It sounds like you would have a wonderful time taking a driving tour to the wineries in Washington, Oregon and California. I like wines from the Anderson Valley, near Mendocino, in California. It is not as touristic as Sonoma or Napa Valleys, at least the last time I was there. The Carmel area is a beautiful place to explore and there are a number of wineries in Carmel Valley, however, at least to my palate, many of the larger, highly touted wineries' output has not been to my liking. I did find one small winery, run by a couple, whose wines I enjoyed. I think their business is called Carmel Valley Winery, but my memory is not co-operating with me at this moment. Walla Walla, Washington has been really coming into its own for wine production. I haven't had time to get over there for a tour yet. Have you owned a restaurant? We have...    less

    Hello Harry!

Thank you for your friendship! You sound like a very interesting fellow and I very much look forward to getting to know you better! I'd love to help you learn more about American wines! I live in one of the BEST American wine producing areas...Portland, Oregon/The Columbia Valley! So, though I am no wine expert, I absolutely adore truly great wine and could recommend at least a handful of our favorites! I will definitely check out some that you mention. Your cellar sounds fabulous! Any reasonably priced amazing wines you care to recommend would be much appreciated as I really detest basing my choice on the information on the label! LOL!

    Hello, Harry:
Sorry that I've neglected my wine jottings for a while... have you been to the Llanerch vineyard in the Vale of Glamorgan? Peter Andrews produces a very nice white wine, called Cariad. It's like the breton Muscadet wines, but it is pricey. Recently, BBC Wales reported that the Llanerch vineyard had called in the receivers; it's a crying shame, what with the recession and the abysmal weather we've had for two years. So if you see a Cariad bottle, buy it - it may be the last.

  • About Me I am a 60 year old Englishman, passionate about food and wine! I love most French wines, especially from Bordeaux, Bergerac and Alsace. I love to try to find fine old clarets and I am very fond of old Burgundies - but then, who isn't? And who can afford them? . I adore the Gewurztraminer grape and much enjoy trying Gewurz. wines from different parts of the world. I have an opportunity regularly to buy wines in Crozes Hermitage and Hermitage and rarely pass this up as I am very fond of Syrah (Shiraz) wines.

I enjoy Australian and South African wines and wish I knew more about them. I know so little about American wine and there are so many; however, we learn by drinking them so I am doing as much learning as is good for me. I hope this site will help to educate me about US wines.

One of the things I love most about wine is that the more you learn, the more you discover there is to find out. You can never know it all. Also, I have learned that you cannot know about good wine without tasting a lot of bad wine! You have to discover what makes good wines good

I am an enthusiastic collector of interesting wine with a cellar sufficient to keep me going for about 50 years at a bottle a night! If I die aged 109 having consumed the last bottle, I shall be a happy man.
  • Gender Male
  • Marital Status Married
  • Occupation Retired Hotelier & Restaurateur.
  • Favorite Wines Margaux, St Emilion, Pomerol. Alsace Reisling and especially Gewurztraminer. Some amazing South African wines and a few special Crozes Hermitage and Cotes du Rhone. I love old Gran Reserva Rioja, Tarragona and Tempranillo and am lucky to have bought some from 1998, 2000 and 2001 for very little money as they are not fashionable in England and anathema in France. They are powerful wines and one can't drink them with everything (alas!). I am looking forward to finishing the 1998 as the 2000 is better and the 2001 even better than that.
  • Favorite Table Wine Banarollo - An insignificant House wine at my local Italian restaurant. £10 a bottle and quite stupendous!

  • Chardonnay Wine
    63 members
Chardonnay is a grape that most everyone is familiar with and most wine drinkers love it. Originally from the Burgundy Region of France, chardonnay is now planted all across the World with great success.

Chardonnay wines are often inarticulate in youth but will blossom with time producing complex aromas of nuts and butter, toast and cream, wild mushrooms and meadow flowers. Their structure while dry can offer great richness with a wide variety of tastes including; lemon, melon peach and apple while still imparting the same creamy, nutty, buttery notes in the wines aroma.

Chardonnays from California often have a silkiness to them with great substance of flavor combined with high alcohol levels and a ripe, fruity character.

Australian chardonnays tend to range from the rich, pollen scented, fiery Hunter Valley chardonnays to the tapered elegance of the chardonnays from Mornington Peninsula and Adelaide Hills.

  • Bordeaux, France
    62 members
If there is one thing that the region of Bordeaux is proud of, it would probably be its line of wines. For the record, Bordeaux is the largest wine-producing region in the whole world, and it would only follow that they produce the best wines available in the market today. Bordeaux is famous for its red wines, though, of course, its white varieties are doing exceptionally good as well.

Every Bordeaux wine possesses distinct quality, flavor, and taste. There are no two wines that are seemingly alike. And to come up with variations, wine makers planted and blended different vines that would collaboratively make up a unique-tasting and fine wine.

Bordeaux wines were said to have existed in the post 48 AD and were originally created for soldiers. As the years advanced, Bordeaux wines found other markets and were thereby exported, though in the earlier years wine exportation was never seen as a grand idea. Bordeaux wine industry witnessed several threats before like infestations and critical economic difficulties, but emerged from them successfully.
