While other regions lie in close proximity to the Napa Valley (Sonoma and Carneros) it is Napa that most people know by name. In fact a lot of people lump in Carneros and Sonoma when they talk about Napa.
The Napa Valley, while only 20 miles long, stretches from the cooler town of Napa to the slightly warmer Calistoga where the foggy ocean access is left behind. In this small valley many vineyards have made their home. Some of California's finest Cabernet Sauvignons come form Napa as do great Cabernet Sauvignon-Merlot-Cabernet Franc blends.
Some of the most notable vineyards are; Schramsberg, Beringer, Grgich Hills, Rubicon Estates, Robert Mondavi, Domaine Chandon, Chimney Rock, Stag's Leap, Rutherford Hill, Niebaum-Coppola, ZD, Merryvale, Mumm Napa, raymond and Beaulieu Vineyard. less

It’s also a beautiful place to explore, and a food lover’s dream. It’s just an hour from San Francisco and neighbors equally compelling Sonoma. Each winery offers visitors a unique experience, and each town - St. Helena, Calistoga, Napa City - has its own character. And the region’s still ramping up. World-class architects like Frank Gehry are toiling on winery projects, chefs make pilgrimages to visit the mighty Thomas Keller (and open their own restaurants) and new events are being added—Flavor! Napa Valley and the Napa Valley Film Festival launched in 2011. less

Phelps Winery is great on a warm day around sunset, they do tastings on the terrace.

Looking for the less crowded wineries, more family owned showing a touch of their class and charactor. This will be for a birthday party bus trip of about 30 people. Any suggestion on some good not every day winiers, that the birthday couple could get a little bit of special treatment, maybe a barrel tasting? Any help would be greatly appreciate.

Especially the Mediterranean regions of Europe. It is like a sense of familiarity came over me. Perhaps, it has been too long since I was in Europe but it definitely felt like I was a young teenager again and Dad was driving us down the road on holiday.
I just love cisiting the vineyards in Napa (Sonoma too). This is where the wine I love came from. I can see how it was made, see the people that made the wine. It makes everything seem more special. Making appointments to visit some of the smaller vineyards is often quite easy too.
As for my favorites, at the moment, I would pick Stag's Leap, Nickel & Nickel, Martinelli and Pahlmeyer (I just ordered some of the red wine). it is always fun to read about more vineyards. learn about them and then go visit them. I could spend months and months in Napa. I could live there too.
