I often wondered how much wine one can manage to drink in one sitting in what period of time. I know that wine is NOT about how much we can drink or how drunk or high we can get, but I was just curious. I can drink a 750 ml bottle of Red Wine in one sitting on any given weekend night alone, sometimes I top it off with an extra mini Red Wine bottle, you know the ones that have 187ml. I work out 5-6 days a week and I drink Red Wine mostly on the weekends, I don't normally drink on the weekdays.
Do you think one 750 ml bottle of Red Wine in one sitting for one person is too much?I think it's 5 glasses of wine per one 750ml bottle. ______________________ dan white

I do sometimes drink a bottle of wine over the course of an evening, maybe start while I'm cooking dinner, more with dinner, finishing it by the end of the evening. Is that "one sitting"?
Considerations in addition to the length of time involved, include the size of the person, the gender (women are supposed to be less able to metabolize alcohol than men), whether there is food involved, consumption of water during one's drinking. If I am having dinner, and drinking water too, I don't find any harm in consuming a bottle of wine on my own. Not a good idea to do this every day, of course, and no driving after drinking. But personally feel it is healthier than those who consume multiple soft drinks; all those nasty chemicals, and sugar or sweetener! Another consideration: The alcohol level of the wine. I don't think I could finish a bottle of Zin at 16% alcohol without getting unpleasantly buzzed. Lastly, if you seldom drink more than a glass or two, it woud affect you much more than if you did it on a regular basis. Me, I practice.

It's funny cause I started drinking just Red Wine when I was 16 or 17 and the last 3 years or so, they have been coming up with all the health benefits to Red Wine. It's really terrific news for us Red Wine drinkers.

I agree with Felicia - soft drinks are certainly worse for one's body than wine. I don't recall the last soda I drank, but I usually have a glass or two of wine with dinner. And I do occasionally finish a bottle over the course of an afternoon/evening. Just think of it as an extra fruit serving for the day! |

Do you think one 750 ml bottle of Red Wine in one sitting for one person is too much?I think it's 5 glasses of wine per one 750ml bottle. the way i pour, it's about 4 glasses per one 750ml bottle. however, after reading this, i have to admit that i down that much myself on any given weekend evening, and occasioanlly, on any given weeknight, but i don't think that's "too much", ha
that would be like the pot calling the kettle black if i said that was bad. i'm sure i drink too much wine. a daily drink is supposed to be "healthy", but i doubt any of those researchers meant for my consumption of a half a bottle to a bottle per evening.
however, i too work out 5-6 days a week, and really don't think it's too terribly awful for me. i drink copious amounts of water during the day, which compensates for something, and i guess therefore don't feel guilty about my "splurges".
ha, listen to me trying to find justification! |

My wife and I share a bottle at lunch time and another for dinner. When I say 'share', I mean generally she has 2 glasses and I have three. On a special day we might have an extra glass at dinner if we have guests or are guests of someone else. However, if we have an Indian curry - which we do often, we won't have wine but will drink lager or cider. |

If I have wine or beer in the house, I'll drink one or 2 in an evening. I can go for days or weeks without it but if it's in the house, I'll drink it pretty much every day with equal amounts of water. |

Personal consumption is roughly about 3-4 bottles per month, but I'm quite sure that more than twice that is opened for visiting friends and family. |

I agree with Vinrouge. I probably drink at about the same pace as she does and work out consistently. I was able to stay in shape and felt great until recently. |

Hello,
My first post on any forum among this group and I am discussing my drinking habits. Well here goes, as my wife does not drink wine I know that if I open a botlle I will be the one consuming it. I quite often drink a bottle a night and on weekends sometimes a little more. As I enjoy wine sooo much but realise my intake is probably a bit on the high side I have tried to abstain for a couple of nights a week, difficult this time of year, or make a bottle last over two evenings. Work has meant I have not been able to attend the gym as often as I would like, something I am going to rectify in the New Year, but I have managed to remain around the same weight. There has been discussions over here in the press about the amount of drink people now consume at home and trying to equate that to binge drinking. Personally I believe there is a world of difference between someone drinking wine at home because they enjoy it and someone going to the pub on a Friday night with there mates to get hammered. Don't get me wrong I have been there and done that but with age comes maturity, sometimes, coupled with the fact that it takes a couple of days to recover from a heavy night these days puts me off going out all night. That said when my friend and I go on wine tours, the most recent to Alsace, you tend to end up wandering around in a semi sober state most of the time due to tasting starting in the morning and ending early evening. Unfortunately I do not seem to have the spitting out gene so my wine purchasing increases in line with consumption until by the end of the trip I am wondering how I am going to fit all the wine into the car and how to explain to the wife that all this wine really is just for my consumption.
Anyway I have rattled on enough, off to open a bottle of 98 Rioja, happy drinking.

How Much??? Well I don't think I drink much because I mostly taste. Meaning I spit spit and spit and taste. But hey its what I do. I get to taste a lot of bad wine and some good wine. There is for sure more bad wine in the market than good.
In the evening when dinner rolls around I will typicaly have 1 glass of wine. Before hand it is a beer and after another beer. I would say that is about 4 nights out of the week. The other 3 nights its more like no booze because there is not enough time....know what I mean??
So during the day ( 5 days a week) any where from 6 to 10 (sometimes 50 ...LMAO) wines I taste...Taste and Spit. And maybe find one wine worth the time.
Thats all I have to say about that....... |

When I was going to trade tastings and going through dozens of wines in a day (sipping, spitting) it was rare for me to drink wine at night more than once or twice a week. Palate fatigue definitely plays into this and after a while, the fun of the buzz was not enough to entice me to pop a bottle. Of course there were always those nights where a dinner party or special meal meant that many bottles were consumed - sometimes at more than 2 or 3 bottles per person over the course of 5 or more hours....
Now that I am working on other things in the industry rather than selling, and only go to trade tastings two or three times a month, I find that I usually have a glass of wine with lunch and almost always a full bottle with dinner every night. Since my wife does not drink wine very much (she is a beer girl) unless I ask her to try something truly memorable, I find that I do the bulk of the wines that I drink are not in the CA 14.5%+ range, but more Bordeaux, Burgundy and German Rieslings that are 7% - 12.5% range. This is a considerable difference at the end of the evening.
I cannot imagine drinking a napa cab every night at 15%... too many hard days afterwards... |

My wine consumption is pretty much on par with Vinrouge's. I know that women are only supposed to have one drink per day, but I just love the taste of wine and don't want to stop with just one.
I drink at least 64 oz. of water every day. I alternate between white wine and red wine, i.e., one night I drink white wine, the next night red wine. The only negative thing I have to say about my wine consumption is that it is expensive. I'm sure I could take a Caribbean vacation with the money spent on wine. |

I had been drinking two glasses every other day (4 oz per glass), but now it seems that I am doing more like 2 every day. Mostly one before dinner and one at dinner. My wife usually has one glass, so it takes us a couple of days to finish a bottle. While I understand the concept of spitting out the wine if just tasting, I can't do it. Seems like a waste of good wine....;-) |
