I often look for good values and Trader Joe's usually has several good wines at low prices. I picked two recently that weren't good values.
Woodman's White - This wine from Hungary describes itself as a mix between Sauvignon Blanc and Gewurztraminer. Being a Gewurz fan and liking some SB's, I decided to give it a try. The nose was rather floral and Gewurztraminer like, but it was a little too tart overall for my tastes. At $2 a bottle, I didn't mind pouring the rest down the drain, but I didn't want to pour it down my throat.
2005 Trader Joe's Reserve Dry Creek Zinfandel - I knew this was too good to be true, a good Dry Creek Zin for $10 a bottle. The nose was encouraging with a nice amount of fruit. On the palate I did get a good amount of plumy jam with hints of raspberry. It has a nice, full body, but the middle and finish are dominated by strong tannins. It was just too dry and dusty for me. I could see blending this with another Zin that's a bit too fruity, but by itself it isn't that wonderful. I'll probably drink the rest, but I won't be in a hurry to finish it.
