In the early 1990s some research suggested that Resveratrol, a chemical compound found in red wine was responsible for amazing health benefits leading to longevity.  People started to drink more red wines and switching from white to red.  many companies started making resveratrol pills and capsules.

The Bad News: Further research suggests that resveratrol is not such a magic compound after all.  It does have some of effects claimed but you would have to drink half the wine lake to get them.

The Good News: There are other substances in red wines called oligomeric procyanadins that do give considerable health benefits.

Just opened a 2003 Pizzini riesling. Pulled the cork out and didn't even need to sniff the wine... the nasty smell was there.
Pizzini (from NE victoria) make excellent wine.  I've been drinking their riesling for quite a few years (and their other stuff, Arneis, Sangiovese and Rosato)  I think this is the first of theirs that has been corked. Like most other Aussie winemakers, Pizzini have gone over to screw caps, do I hope it will be the last.

Just back in Melbourne from the Kimberley - a remote part of Australia in the wet/dry tropics. Plenty to see, stunning gorges, caves, aboriginal art, waterfalls, crocodiles, stunning landscapes and scenery, but mostly bumpy unmade roads and dirt tracks.  Not much wine, it's better to drink beer in that environment, but I did manage to try a couple of nice WA Cabernet Merlots.

Back to work on promoting my sangiovese book. plus getting the larger one organised.

Not the country the wine region.  It's part of the Great Southern Wine Zone in Western Australia.

Last Night I enjoyed a couple of bottles of West Cape Howe Tempranillo with friends at the Tuesday steak night at the local pub.

The wine went well with the grilled steak and chips.  Like all good temps it had a lovely fruity-sweet middle palate but finished dry. It is another fine example of the growing list of Tempranillo wines made in Australia.
